Walks Sunday January 14th 2024

Posted on: Fri 12th January 4:43pm
Good news is that the weather on Sunday looks good for walking, and the other good news is that we have 2 walks on, hopefully to satisfy everyone.
In no particular order....
A walk with Tom in Boyle Forest Park. A loop walk incorporating Cloontykilla castle. A bit of history....this castle was built on the shores of Lough Key, in around 1839 and used as a hunting and fishing lodge and owned by the Harmon family. It was left to go derelict and then along comes Sean Simon who bought it in 1989 with a dream of turning it into a 12 bedroom residence. Anyway, to cut a long story short, he faffed around too much, ran out of money and there it stands.
So for this outing, meet Tom at the Crescent in Boyle at 12 midday for this pleasant walk, suitable for all. Any queries?? Phone Tom 087 237 9632

Then we have a tougher walk with Philip. This walk is in the Leean/Fawnlion area. At 417m, Leean is the 865th highest place in Ireland and the 8,173rd highest in GB and Ireland!! Well known to archaeologists as a complex prehistoric landscape. This walk entails climbing (400m) and is on rough terrain, possibly boggy in parts. Walk will be around 4-5 hours, so come prepared with the right gear...boots, warm clothes, lunch, drink etc. (See basic requirements as per calendar)
For this walk, meet Crescent Boyle at 10am or Doon Lough car park on the R278 at 11am. Any queries about this walk?? Phone Philip 086 335 3000
